Gabriele Kupfernagel was born in Chemnitz and received her first musical training from her mother. Later she studied at the specialist music school in Dresden, and then at the Dresden Hochschule für Musik in the piano class of Gerhard Berge. After her graduation she was given the opportunity to study for three years at the Tchaikovsky Conservatory in Moscow with Tatjana Nikolajewa.

In 1972 Gabriele Kupfernagel was a prizewinner at the International Bach Competition in Leipzig, and in 1974 and 1975 she was awarded the Mendelssohn scholarship. She has performed regularly as soloist and in chamber music ensembles. She played as soloist with famous orchestras (Berliner Staatskapelle, Berliner Sinfonieorchester, Dresdner Philharmonie a.o.). In this time she was teaching at the Academy of Music in Dresden and Berlin. Since 1992 she is Professor of Piano and Chamber music at the Academy of Music Hanns Eisler Berlin. Additionally she hold masterclasses in Europe, Japan and China
